Inmates granted parole at the start of the pandemic should be granted parole again for a period of 90 days.

Pursuant to order dated 23rd March, 2020 several prisoners were released on parole to address the issue of decongestion of prisons. On 7th May, 2021 the Supreme Court held that all those prisons who were released on 23rd March, 2020 were to be released on parole again for a period of 90 days, with appropriate conditions, so as to tide over the COVID wave.

Relevant extracts of the said order have been reproduced below-

“Fourth, further we direct that, those inmates who were granted parole, pursuant to our earlier orders, should be again granted a parole for a period of 90 days in order to tide over the pandemic. “
